The UAAA program was founded in 2003 with women’s wheelchair basketball. Men’s wheelchair basketball was added in 2005, wheelchair tennis in 2011, and para track and field in 2023. UAAA has grown from 5 athletes and 2 volunteer staff to over 40 athletes, 17 full time staff, and over 150 volunteers. The program has earned 24 national championship titles across all sports and graduated 72 students in undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. programs. Current or former UA athletes have competed at the Paralympics since 2004; in Paris in 2024 there were 18 UA athletes or staff competing in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and handcycling. In January 2018 UA opened a $10 million facility designed for and dedicated to the Adapted Athletics program; the first of its kind on a college campus in the United States. October 2021 marked the opening of the Parker-Haun Tennis Facility, another first for collegiate adapted sports.
