Alabama Adapted Athletics Hosts Historic Summer Camp with Record Attendance

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama Adapted Athletics welcomed a record number of athletes to campus this summer, hosting both its annual Wheelchair Basketball Overnight Camp and its first-ever All-Sport Day Camp at Stran-Hardin Arena.

The Wheelchair Basketball Overnight Camp brought 79 athletes from across the United States to The University of Alabama for four days of skill development, competition, and community. Campers trained alongside Alabama student-athletes and coaches while developing their basketball fundamentals, learning advanced game strategies, and building lifelong friendships with fellow athletes who share a passion for the sport.

Following the overnight camp, Alabama Adapted Athletics hosted an All-Sport Day Camp, expanding opportunities for athletes to experience wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and para track and field. The new camp format introduced athletes to multiple sports while providing instruction from coaches and student-athletes across all three programs.

"The growth of our summer camps reflects the continued growth of adapted sports across the country," said Alabama Adapted Athletics Director, Dr. Brent Hardin. "We are proud to provide opportunities for athletes of all ages to learn new skills, gain confidence, and experience what is possible through sport."

In addition to on-court and on-track instruction, campers participated in team-building activities, leadership development opportunities, and competitions designed to challenge and inspire them throughout the week.

Alabama Adapted Athletics would also like to thank our partners for helping make our first-ever All-Sport Day Camp a reality. Thank you to the Stephen D. Menzies Rising Youth Athletics Foundation, WillPower Community Foundation, UA Early College, and The University of Alabama Online for investing in opportunities for athletes with disabilities and helping us continue to grow adapted sports. Their support made it possible for campers to experience wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and para track and field throughout the week. Another highlight of camp included the presentation of a new sports wheelchair to camper Madison Etheridge through the support of Move United, The Hartford, and RGK Wheelchairs.

For more than two decades, Alabama Adapted Athletics has been committed to creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities through sport. The success of this year's camps further demonstrates the program's impact and its role as a national leader in adapted athletics.

Alabama Adapted Athletics would like to thank its campers, families, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors for helping make this year's camps one of the most successful in program history.
